Victims of a decades-old forced sterilization program in North Carolina will have to wait on compensation because legislators did not include any money for them in a state budget deal, in part because Republican leaders could not agree on how to respond to the victims.

A History of Weaponized Language

Tuesday, March 27th, 2012

During their conquest of the Indus civilization, the avant-garde of the invading Aryan army included priests tasked with reciting, with ultimate fidelity, the “magic words” of the Vedic texts. These incantations, or mantras, if pronounced with slavish precision, were believed to aid in the victory of the advancing forces. While the effectiveness of the magic words is certainly open to debate, the victory of the Aryans, who would go on to rule the Indus valley, is not.*

Scholar, author to speak about American eugenics

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Edwin Black wants you to know the truth about American eugenics.

In the early twentieth century, over 60,000 U.S. residents were sterilized in state institutions. The sterilizations were coercive and took place for an array of reasons. Some were sterilized because of their criminal activities, others because of low intelligence, still others because of perceived promiscuity.

N.C. eugenics victims running out of time.

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

About two months ago, two veteran Charlotte Observer reporters set out to find Mecklenburg County victims of North Carolina’s eugenics program. State records show 485 people from Mecklenburg were sterilized in the program, which was most active from 1946 to 1968, so our reporters built a database, chased leads and, as of Friday, have been able to confirm none of those victims.

Is forced sterilization ever OK?

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Is it appropriate to involuntarily sterilize a mentally disabled person? That’s the question a British judge is mulling in the case of a 21-year-old, referred to as “P” in court documents, who is legally considered incapable of consenting to the procedure. She already has one child and another one is on the way. The woman’s mother has asked the court for permission to have “P” sterilized to prevent future pregnancies — she’s the one who has to take care of these children, after all, and she can’t afford to take on a third.

The New Yorker – The rise of marriage therapy, and other dreams of human betterment.

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

Eugenics relied on a colossal misunderstanding of science and a savage misreading of history. William McDougall, a Harvard psychologist, believed that ignorance could be eradicated by encouraging people who could read to reproduce and forbidding those who couldn’t, as if this followed naturally from Mendel, with his peas, wrinkly and smooth. Madison Grant cobbled together Herbert Spencer, Charles Darwin, and Frederick Jackson Turner to write the history of Western civilization as the Nordic race’s epic battle for demographic supremacy.

N.C. eugenics survivors seek justice

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

In 1968, at just 14 years old, Elaine became one of the thousands of victims of North Carolina’s forced sterilization program. Quietly and efficiently operating from 1929 until 1974, the program’s purpose was to weed out the “unfit” of society by stopping them from reproducing.
